Pericles, meaning “surrounded by glory”, was a prominent statesman, famous orator, and general of Athens during the Golden Age of Athens. So profound was his influence that the period in which he led Athens was named the ‘Age of Pericles’. His influence on Athenian society was so great that Thucydides, his contemporary admirer and historian, called him “the first citizen of Athens”.
What has made Pericles such an admirable person? Pericles knew his WHY and was able to share his beliefs with his followers. He further understood that there was always a future to be prepared for and acted accordingly.
We share Pericles’ view of the world, which is today as accurate as it was 2500 years ago. To be prepared for the future is key, especially with today’s challenges in the societies of the 21st Century, such as finding permanence in constant change and simplify in rising complexity.
